After nearly a decade in the classroom, one pattern became impossible to ignore.
Parents enroll their child in ESL classes and expect fluency in three to six months. Schools promise it. English centers advertise it. Administrators track it. And when it doesn't happen — when a five-year-old still can't hold a conversation after a semester — everyone starts asking why.

Most preschools and ESL centers rely on young, overworked teachers doing their absolute best under difficult conditions. Many are still in training.
