Sentence practice

I can ___!

Before reading

  • Look at the cover. What do you see?
  • What do trains carry?
  • What is something hard for you to do?

After reading

  • What was the train carrying?
  • Who helped at the end?
  • What did the little engine say?

How to teach it

  1. Open the PowerPoint. Ask the "before reading" questions and teach the new words with the flashcards.
  2. Hand out one flashcard per child. Read the book aloud. Children hold up their card when they hear their word.
  3. Practise the sentence pattern together, then play the picture game in the slides.
  4. Ask the "after reading" questions.
  5. Finish with the printable project: Load the Toy Train.
